The Audi S5 is a high-performance compact executive car available since 2007.
Audi S5 Introduction and Engine Specifications
The S5 shares the same B-platform as both the Audi A5 and the Audi A4, with Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP) design. While the A5 was intended to be a sporty version of the A4, the S5 would take that mentality and provide it with higher performance. While the A5 featured a 3.2L V6 or 3.0L turbodiesel, the S5 Coupe came with a larger 4.2L V8 engine that produced a very respectable 350 horsepower, paired to a 6-speed manual or tiptronic transmission. The Cabriolet convertible and Sportback variants of the S5 came with the supercharged 3.0L V6 engine with 329 horsepower, paired to a 7-speed S-tronic transmission. The S5 distinguishes itself on the exterior from the A5 with a variety of enchanted features. It uses large inlets on the front bumper, bi-Xenon headlights, 19” wheels, and more aggressive body kit all around.
Later Update and Engine Change
In 2013, an updated Audi S5 was released on the B8 platform, this time exclusively available in the supercharged 3.0L V6 that was previously used in the Cabriolet and Sportback only. Mileage of the V8 was dropped in favor of the more economical 3.0L with 26 mpg rating. The Audi S5 also received a variety of other external and internal enhancements at that time, including various changes to the internal control systems and interface with Google Maps. The front-end was altered to provide a more aggressive look with a new grille and updated LED lights all around.
Current Generation Modifications
The current generation Audi S5 was first released in 2017, still available as a Coupe, Cabriolet, and Sportback. Once again, the exterior changes have been substantial, with new bumper, side skirts, and one-piece grille. Inside, an available virtual cockpit works seamlessly with Apply CarPlay, has adjustable heated front seats, and a variety of other luxurious options. The 3.0L V6 engine remains, but now with a twin-turbocharged design placed in a V formation to reduce turbo lag. It has increased horsepower to 349 and has 369 lb ft of torque, plenty for any trip around town or on longer trips. It is paired with an 8-speed tiptronic transmission, now completely removing the manual transmission option. A wide variety of trim levels are available for the current Audi S5, with everything from a black-out package with large 20-inch wheels, and an S Sport package for those spirited driving sessions where adaptive dampers, torque-vectoring rear differential, and enhanced brakes will come into play. It can push 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds as the Coupe, or 4.7 seconds in the Cabriolet. As always, the Audi S5 comes with quattro full-time all-wheel drive, yet is still able to achieve a fairly reasonable highway mileage of about 28 to 30 mpg.
Features and Available Options
Driver assistance packages are available on the latest Audi S5, including many features to help make maneuvering in tight spaces easier. Perpendicular and parallel park assist control the steering while the driver handles throttle and braking. Adaptive cruise control with lane assist turns those awful commutes into a relaxed time behind the wheel, while a top-view camera system provides the ultimate visibility for making sure to avoid contact with any nearby obstruction. Many reviews of the Audi S5 discuss the aggressive and lovely styling, something that seems to be slightly lacking in other rival vehicles, and the road feel and drivability adhere to the usual Audi standard that puts the driving experience first. Since the S5 comes available in a wide array of body styles, it an be a good fit for a lot of different needs. Those with little need for rear legroom can opt for the sleek 2-door Coupe, while others that want the Sportback design can have more cargo room and second-row seating comfort.
