The GMC Syclone is a high-performance model of the GMC Sonoma pickup truck manufactured by General Motors from 1991 to 1992. General Motors manufactured a total of 2,998 Syclone in its two years of production run: 1991 - 2,995 units and 1992 - 3 units.
History of GMC Syclone
GMC and Production Automotive Services (PAS) manufactured and sold the GMC Syclone, Sonoma GT, and Typhoon in car dealerships. The Syclone was the fastest factory pickup truck on the market at its release. A 4L60 4-speed automatic transmission was standard on all Syclones and Typhoons.
These two models feature a Mitsubishi TD06-17C 8cm² turbocharger with Garrett water/air intercooler connected to a 4.3 L LB4 V6 engine:
- Hypereutectic pistons
- Nodular iron main caps
- Intake manifolds
- Upgraded head gaskets
- Exhaust manifolds
- A 48mm twin-bore throttle body
Despite the official statistics, the Syclone was more powerful than the concept vehicle and produced more horsepower than performance vehicles such as the Mazda RX-7 or the Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II. Even though GMC intended the model for a small run, it was a big hit, selling 2,995 units worldwide, 150 of which were shipped to Saudi Arabia after minor changes. GMC produced three additional units in 1992 for internal usage after production ended in the latter half of 1991. Even after three decades, the 1991 GMC Syclone is still regarded as one of the best-looking factory-built trucks in American history. Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE), located in New Jersey, brings back its 750-hp mid-size pickup truck. The truck is based on the new GMC Canyon and is SVE's improved version of the GMC Syclone. SVE introduced the Syclone in 2019 with a 455-hp supercharged V6, but for 2021, the manufacturer replaced it with a 750-hp supercharged V-8. SVE intends to create 50 additional trucks for the 2022 model year, bringing the total number of vehicles produced to 50. Syclone was released initially by SVE in 2019 and was an immediate smash. A supercharged V6 engine provided 455 horsepower to the vehicle. On the other hand, SVE is back in 2022 with a more lethal Syclone. Actually, the new vehicle will be equipped with a 5.3L V-8 engine from General Motors that produces 750 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Customers may expect special floor mats, a leather bundle, and a numbered dashboard plaque.
Price
General Motors sold the GMC Syclone in 1991 with an MSRP of $25,790 ($53,722 in 2022). A low-mileage version of this daring Ferrari killer costs roughly $28,000, which is a tiny amount to pay for a bold car. The pricing for the 2022 GMC Syclone is still not final, but the current model starts at $80,000.
Features
In terms of details, this vehicle appears to be highly muscular, with several athletic poses. In many aspects, it differs from its sibling, the GMC Canyon. The 2022 GMC Syclone, like its predecessors, is based on the Canyon pickup truck. According to reports, both models would share the same platform and structure. The Syclone, on the other hand, will be available with an extended cab and a short bed. To begin with, the Syclone has a more aggressive appearance, thanks to the recent black grille and LED lighting package. The front end has been updated to look like the GMC Sierra, a larger, more premium vehicle. More modifications include a new body-colored cover covering the rear bumper. It also features matte black finishes and 20-inch five-spoke wheels. The manufacturer also employed a new exhaust system, giving the vehicle a more sporty appearance. The second-generation GMC Syclone will have a more contemporary interior than the first generation. This vehicle is high-end and comes with a lot of high-quality elements. But unlike the average Canyon, the SVE will have a wider interior. Five people can sit comfortably in this custom-built vehicle. The arrangement is primarily the same as on the Canyon model.
More features for the 2022 Syclone are as follows:
- Leather package (with leather inserts)
- 8-inch touchscreen
- Onboard Wi-Fi
- Apple CarPlay
- Android Auto
